Objectives

- To apply theoretical understandings of the biopsychosocial determinants of stress to practice;
- to critically evaluate theories relating to the impact of stress on the mental health of individuals and communities;
- to appraise strategies for assessing stress in mental health care;
- to synthesise the evidence base supporting interventions to reduce stress into practice;
- to critically analyse the efficacy of stress reduction strategies.

Syllabus

The module provides an overview of the stress vulnerability model which offers a framework for understanding the effects stress can have on the mental health of individuals and communities.

Through the process of lectures and seminars the phenomenon of stress will be explored from biological, psychological and sociological perspectives. The students will be exposed to a range of assessment tools to compliment and inform their practice.

This learning process will be underpinned by current research that focuses on stress reduction activities and interventions. By utilising practice experience, reflection and tutorial guidance the students will be encouraged to determine the effectiveness of their intervention strategies.
